Biography

Born in 1987 in Novorossiysk. She studied at the Galina Vishnevskaya Moscow School of Theatre, graduated from the Gnessin State Music College in 2008 (class of Ruzanna Lisitsian), and in 2013 from the vocal faculty of the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music. From 2012 to 2015, she was an artist at the Bolshoi Theatre's Young Opera Program. 

In 2004, she became a laureate of the second prize at the Moscow Festival of Academic Singing "Silver Voice". In 2011, she received first prize at the International Student Competition "Bella Voce"; in 2013, she became the winner of the Queen Sonja International Music Competition in Oslo. She is a laureate of the International Music Competition Giovanni Battista Viotti in Vercelli (First Prize, 2014), the Plácido Domingo Operalia Competition in Astana (Second Prize, 2017), and other prestigious competitions. She was awarded the Russian Opera Prize "Casta Diva" (2023, nomination "Singer of the Year"). 

In 2015, she performed as Violetta (Verdi's "La Traviata") at the Norwegian Opera and as Lauretta and Giorgetta (Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi" and "Il Tabarro") at the Royal Danish Theatre; a year later, she performed the role of Giulietta (Bellini's "I Capuleti e i Montecchi") at the Bergen National Opera. In 2017, she made her Glyndebourne Festival debut as Violetta, a role she also performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Basel Theatre, and in the following season at the Royal Opera of Muscat and Palm Beach Opera. She also performed in Cavalli's "Eliogabalo" (Aritea) at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, Cavalli's "Giasone" (Hypsipyle) at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, and Bizet's "Carmen" (Micaëla) at the Norwegian Opera in Oslo. In 2018, the singer made her debuts at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London (Micaëla, "Carmen", directed by Barrie Kosky), at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia (Medora – Verdi's "Il Corsaro"), at the Rome Opera and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (Violetta), at Opera Australia (Gilda, Verdi's "Rigoletto"), and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (Lauretta, "Gianni Schicchi"). Since then, Kristina Mkhitaryan has performed regularly at the world's leading opera stages.
